# Etsy and the Shop: connect your Etsy shop, what syncs and marking orders shipped

||| **Not live for everyone yet.** The Shop is rolling out to a closed pilot first, so some accounts don't see it yet. Etsy is open to a small number of named pilot shops: during the pilot, Etsy lets SimplyPrint connect only a handful of shops in total.

Etsy is where a lot of 3D printed products are sold, and Etsy orders are some of the most fiddly to print: variations for size and colour, personalization boxes, and shipping deadlines Etsy holds you to. Connecting your Etsy shop to the Shop brings your listings and orders into SimplyPrint, so each order prints the right variant with the buyer's personalization in front of whoever makes it, and shipping it in SimplyPrint can mark it shipped on Etsy.

This article covers connecting an Etsy shop, what comes across, how quickly, marking orders shipped, Etsy's own limits, and disconnecting. The steps that are the same for every store are in [Connecting a store to the Shop](https://help.simplyprint.io/en/article/connecting-a-store-to-the-shop-guided-setup-import-rules-and-what-is-shared-ss2u94/).

|| The Shop is part of the Print Farm and Enterprise plans. Connecting Etsy needs **Manage store connections** and **Edit organisation settings**, and an account in the Etsy pilot.

The term "Etsy" is a trademark of Etsy, Inc. This application uses the Etsy API but is not endorsed or certified by Etsy, Inc.

## Connecting your Etsy shop
Etsy has no app page in your Etsy admin, so it's connected from SimplyPrint:

1. Go to **Settings > Shop > Connections**, find **Etsy** and choose **Set up**.
2. Choose **Connect Etsy**. Etsy asks you to sign in and approve read access to your shop, orders and listings.
3. You land back in SimplyPrint, where the Shop greets the new store and offers guided setup.

Connecting imports nothing and starts no prints. Guided setup then asks how to tell printed items apart (an Etsy tag such as `3d-print`, or a shop section), how orders should arrive, and how much customer detail you need. See [Connecting a store to the Shop](https://help.simplyprint.io/en/article/connecting-a-store-to-the-shop-guided-setup-import-rules-and-what-is-shared-ss2u94/).

## What comes across from Etsy
**Listings**, in every state Etsy keeps them (active, inactive, sold out, draft and expired):

- The title and main photo (not the listing description)
- SKUs, per variation, with each variation's price
- Tags, which you can use in your printing rule
- Shop sections, which arrive as categories and are labelled **Section** in rules
- Variations, and personalization questions as product options

**Orders** (Etsy receipts), once paid by default:

- Each item with its variation, quantity and price
- The buyer's personalization answers and paid options, if you allow them
- The recipient's name, if you allow it
- Amounts, with Etsy's VAT counted as tax
- Etsy's shipping deadline, as the order's due date context

Digital downloads on an order are recognised as not needing printing. Items sold as supplies or bought in (an LED bulb, say) are left out of print work by your printing rule, and stay on the order for packing.

## Variations, sizes and colours
Etsy's built-in variation properties are recognised: **Primary color** and **Secondary color** read as colour; **Width**, **Height**, **Depth**, **Length**, **Diameter**, **Dimensions** and **Size** read as size, with their units ("15 cm"). Custom variations named like "Size" are recognised too.

Each Etsy variation is a store variant to map. Map "Vase, Red / 15 cm" to the 15 cm variant of your vase Project. Colour doesn't pick a filament yet; it shows on the order for whoever queues and makes it. See [Products and mapping](https://help.simplyprint.io/en/article/shop-products-map-store-products-to-projects-variants-and-csv-import-mpv1bf/).

## Personalization and buyer notes
Etsy personalization arrives on the order line, so "Name to engrave: Ada" is right there when the item is made. What the buyer typed or uploaded is personal information, so it only comes in when **Customer-supplied item details** is allowed for the store. Answers picked from a dropdown you wrote, and paid options, come in with **Paid add-ons and extras**, and the buyer's message with **Customer checkout notes**. All three are off until you turn them on.

## How quickly orders arrive
Etsy tells SimplyPrint about new and changed orders straight away, usually within seconds. As a safety net, SimplyPrint also reads every order changed since its last check, every 15 minutes, so an order is never lost if a notification goes missing. Listings are checked every 6 hours.

With **Automatically import eligible orders** on, paid Etsy orders placed from the start date come in by themselves. Otherwise, use **Import orders** and pick them.

## Refunds and cancellations
Etsy sends no notification for refunds, so a refund arrives with the next 15-minute check. Like any store change, it waits for your review on the order, and a full refund pauses the order's queued prints by default. A cancellation on Etsy arrives straight away, shows as **Cancelled in store**, and waits for **Review store cancellation**. See [Shop orders](https://help.simplyprint.io/en/article/shop-orders-store-orders-manual-orders-review-and-release-mv1hd6/).

A refund of part of a line's money (rather than whole items) is flagged for a person to look at. The Shop never guesses which pieces it covers.

## Marking orders shipped on Etsy
> **During the pilot, this is switched on shop by shop.** Until it is on for your shop, the store's page reads "SimplyPrint reads this Etsy shop and writes nothing to it. Mark orders shipped in Etsy." Mark those orders shipped on Etsy, and SimplyPrint picks that up and offers **Move to Shipped**.

When you ship an order in SimplyPrint, the Shop can mark it shipped on Etsy, with the carrier and tracking number, so you don't do it twice. To allow it:

1. Open the Etsy store's page under **Settings > Shop > Connections**.
2. Choose **Allow marking orders shipped**, then **Continue to Etsy**, and approve it on Etsy's page.

From then on, moving an order to **Shipped** marks it shipped on Etsy within a few minutes. A plain **Reconnect** keeps what you allowed. Even an order moved to Shipped by a workflow rule you set up yourself is marked shipped on Etsy.

Things to know:
- **Etsy always emails the buyer** when an order is marked shipped. SimplyPrint sends the buyer nothing itself. The "Tell the customer when you ship" setting shows as locked on for Etsy.
- **Tracking is required** for some shipments, such as within the US over $10, and to India. Without it, the order says so; add the number and press **Retry**.
- **Carriers** are passed to Etsy by name; a carrier you type in yourself is sent as "other".
- **Changing tracking afterwards isn't sent.** On Etsy that would add a second shipment and email the buyer again, so a new tracking number is kept in SimplyPrint only.
- **Shipped on Etsy first?** If an order already shows as shipped on Etsy, nothing is sent twice. An order you shipped on Etsy (with an Etsy label, for example) shows for review with **Move to Shipped**.

## What Etsy doesn't share
- **Shipping addresses.** SimplyPrint doesn't read shipping addresses from Etsy, so Etsy orders arrive with the recipient's name only. Print the address from Etsy, or ship with an Etsy label.
- **A customer list.** Etsy doesn't share one with apps, so **Import customers** isn't available for Etsy.
- **Marking shipped in some countries.** For shops based in Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, the United States and Vietnam, Etsy doesn't let new apps mark orders shipped. The store's page says so ("Etsy does not let new apps mark orders shipped for shops in US"). Mark those orders shipped on Etsy or with your Etsy shipping partner; SimplyPrint then sees it and offers **Move to Shipped**.
- **Stock.** SimplyPrint doesn't read or change Etsy stock.

## Reconnecting and disconnecting
On the Etsy store's page:

- **Reconnect** renews the connection, for example after Etsy asks you to sign in again. Your orders, products and mappings stay, and Etsy returns straight away if you approved it before.
- **Disconnect** stops SimplyPrint reading the shop. Imported orders, products and mappings stay, and reconnecting the same shop picks them up again. **Disconnect and delete this store's data** also removes its listings, variant mappings and customer details from SimplyPrint, while what was printed stays in your history; reconnecting afterwards starts fresh, with no mappings.
- To remove SimplyPrint on Etsy as well, open Etsy, then **Settings**, then **Apps**, and remove it there.

After reconnecting, orders placed while the shop was disconnected aren't pulled in by themselves. Choose **Import orders placed while disconnected** to bring them in under your import rules.

## Troubleshooting
- **"This Etsy account has no shop to connect."** The Etsy account you signed in with has no shop. Sign in with the account that owns it.
- **"Etsy answered for a different shop. Try connecting again."** or **"This Etsy grant now opens a different shop. Reconnect the store in SimplyPrint."** You approved access while signed in to another Etsy shop. Sign in to the right one and reconnect.
- **"Etsy refused to mark the order shipped. Check the order on Etsy, then retry."** Open the order on Etsy to see why, fix it there, and press **Retry**.
- **"The order is cancelled in the store"** or **"refunded in the store"**: Etsy won't mark it shipped. Nothing to retry.
- **An Etsy order didn't arrive.** Check that it's paid (unpaid orders aren't imported by default), that it was placed after the automatic import start date, and that it matches your import rules. Wait for the next 15-minute check, or use **Import orders**.
- **Every Etsy item is refused as not printable.** Your printing rule probably relies on tags or sections; check that the listing carries the tag and that **Source product tags** is allowed for the store.
