Group, move, sort and arrange printers in the "Printers" panel (Printer Groups feature)
In SimplyPrint you can create printer groups. In this article we'll go over what they are, how they work and how to set them up.
What are "Printer Groups" in SimplyPrint?
Printer groups help you organize your printers in SimplyPrint. Use cases include;
- Setting up one group per rack, table or shelf that your printers are split up in - physically, in your space
- Group printers by their brand or model
- Group by location, warehouse or room if your printers aren't all in the same space
Creating & editing printer groups, and arranging printers
To create a printer group, edit existing ones, or move printers around, arranging them however you see fit, simply head over to the "Printers" page on the SimplyPrint web panel (https://simplyprint.io/panel/printers) - note that if you're a member of an organization/multi-user account, you must have permission from your administrator to group printers.
Now locate the "Group/move printers" button. Note; this button may just appear as an icon for you if you already have printer groups.
Here, click "Create new group" and start dragging printers around!
Move the printers up or down in their group, or from group to group, by dragging them with your mouse.
You can name your printer groups by clicking the group name and writing anything you'd like.
Functional in-platform uses of Printer Groups
Printer groups don't only help you get a better visual overview of your printers - it can also help you, and us, inside SimplyPrint start prints and target printers more efficiently.
Bulk-actions: start prints for a group, multi-tag/clear/stop/pause
Printer groups don't just offer organization; they can also be used to perform an action on multiple printers at the same time - but rather than all printers, just a group of printers.
This includes;
- Start a print on all available machines in the group
- Clear all printer's beds
- Multi-tag: tag all printers in group
- Multi- cancel, pause, resume, preheat, cooldown and home.
Printer selection: select & assign printer groups
In various parts of the system, you can assign printers, printer models and printer groups to a file, print queue item, print queue group, staggered start group, etc.: with your printers grouped, you can select that a file or queue group is for the printer group, rather than a static set of printers: this means when you move a printer in or out of this group, the group will be what the file or queue group has a relation to, rather than the specific printer.
