Which pause option should I choose?

Which pause option should I choose?

When adding a layer pause in the SimplyPrint slicer, you'll see two options: Machine Settings and OctoPrint. This article explains the difference and helps you pick the right one.

SimplyPrint will automatically recommend the option that matches your printer setup.

Machine Settings

This option uses the pause G-code configured in your machine profile. The exact command depends on how your machine is set up - it could be M25, M600, or a custom sequence.

Choose this if:

  • You're printing from an SD card or directly to the printer
  • Your printer runs standalone firmware (Marlin, Klipper with direct USB, etc.)
  • You've configured a specific pause sequence in your slicer machine settings

Common pause commands:

  • M25 - Pause SD card print
  • M600 - Filament change (with park/unload)
  • M0 - Unconditional stop

OctoPrint

This option inserts the @pause host command. OctoPrint and compatible host software intercepts this command and pauses the print through the host rather than the printer firmware.

Choose this if:

  • You're printing through OctoPrint, Moonraker, or similar host software
  • SimplyPrint shows an OctoPrint icon next to your printer
  • You want the host software to handle pausing (for webcam snapshots, notifications, etc.)

Still not sure?

SimplyPrint highlights the recommended option based on your printer type. If you see "Matches your printer" next to an option, that's usually the right choice.

If your pauses aren't working as expected:

  1. Check your machine settings in the slicer to see what pause G-code is configured
  2. Make sure your printer firmware supports the pause command being used
  3. If using OctoPrint, verify the @pause action is enabled in OctoPrint's settings
