LutraCAD SimplyPrint integration: what is it, and how to set it up and use

In this article, we'll show you how to set up the SimplyPrint integration inside LutraCAD, why and how to use it!

What is LutraCAD?

LutraCAD is a CAD software and scanning solutions for designing custom insoles, shoe lasts, and midsoles. The 3D print technology is great for insole-making, as it allows you to use varying densities, in contrast to "subtractive manufacturing", such as CNC milling, where it's often just one material with the same density and thickness all the way through - LutraCAD allows you to easily make an insole design and print it for your customers.

What is the LutraCAD SimplyPrint integration?

The SimplyPrint integration for LutraCAD, made by the LutraCAD team, is built-in to the LutraCAD software (published in their July 2. update, 2024), and it allows you to easily transfer your sliced insoles, shoe lasts and midsoles files, directly from the LutraCAD software, into your SimplyPrint 3D printing management platform.

How to set up SimplyPrint support in LutraCAD?

If you haven't used LutraCAD before, you first have to get a license and set up their software. You can learn more on the LutraCAD website, as well as see more about how their software works on their YouTube channel; https://www.youtube.com/@LutraCAD
In this guide, we'll not teach you how to use the core features of LutraCAD; it is expected that you know your way around their software already.
If you haven't yet signed up for SimplyPrint either, you can do so here; https://simplyprint.io/signup

1. Ensuring you're up-to-date

Remember that LutraCAD requires you to have the Rhino CAD software installed, as well as the Cura slicer

To set up SimplyPrint support in LutraCAD, first you've got to make sure that your software is up-to-date, no older than V3.1.2 from July 2. 2024 (see release history here).

2. Add SimplyPrint as a "Network printer"

Open up LutraCAD
In the top right corner, hover over the "Account" text
Click "Settings"
Go to the "3D Printer" tab

While you're in the 3D printer settings, ensure that you have at least one non-network 3D printer model enabled! This is needed later! Find your printer in the list, and click "Enable".

Click "Network printers"
Click the button called "Add printer manually"
Select "SimplyPrint.io" in the dropdown popup, and click "Select"

Navigate to "Network printers"

Add network printer

2.1 Authorize LutraCAD in your SimplyPrint account

This will open up your default browser, asking you to log in to your SimplyPrint account if you aren't already, and finally, to authorize the LutraCAD application to use your SimplyPrint account.
Click "Authorize", and
Once done, "SimplyPrint.io" should show in your list of "Network printers"!

Authorization done

Done!

Now, SimplyPrint support is enabled for your LutraCAD instance! Next up; how to use it!

How to use the SimplyPrint integration in LutraCAD

Now that we, in the previous step, set up SimplyPrint as a "Network printer", you can now start using it!
To send your first file to SimplyPrint, navigate to any LutraCAD design for any client.

Once your design is ready, ensure you have selected a 3D printer, and a 3D printing manufacturing method, and go to the "Export" step and click "Produce now".

"Produce now"

Once the design is prepared, you'll now - if you have a printer selected - see the option to export as STL and gcode like normally, but, with the addition of the "Send to SimplyPrint.io" button!
Click this button, and both you and your file(s) will be taken to the SimplyPrint platform!

"Send to SimplyPrint"

Once clicked, you'll see a screen much like this (below), where you can now choose to either save the file, print it directly, or add it to your print queue!

Inside the SimplyPrint platform

And that's it! You now know how to set up and use the SimplyPrint integration inside the LutraCAD software!
