Setting up your school dashboards

Setting up your school dashboards

The teacher / student dashboards work out of the box on a School account, but every setting is yours to tune. This guide walks you through the full configuration screen at Settings -> Organisation -> School settings -> Dashboards: turning each dashboard on or off, picking widgets, choosing status cards for teachers, and previewing your changes before students or staff see them.

The dashboards live on the School plan (Feature::TEACHER_STUDENT_DASHBOARD). You need the Manage school settings permission (org_school_settings_manage) to open this screen.

Opening the dashboards settings

Go to Settings -> Organisation and expand the School settings card. Inside, you'll find a Dashboards sub-section with two configurators side by side — one for the student dashboard, one for the teacher dashboard.

If you can't see the School settings card at all, your account isn't on the School plan, or your rank doesn't have the Manage school settings permission. Ask your account admin to grant it, or upgrade to the School plan on the pricing page.

Enabling or disabling each dashboard

Each dashboard (teacher and student) has its own master Enabled toggle. With a dashboard disabled, users on that role will land on the standard printers / files page instead of /panel/dashboard.

The two toggles are independent. You can:

  • Run both dashboards (the typical setup for a classroom).
  • Run only the teacher dashboard, while students continue to use the standard panel landing page.
  • Run only the student dashboard, while teachers continue to use the standard panel landing page.
  • Turn both off, hiding the dashboard sidebar entry entirely.

Most schools leave both on.

Choosing which widgets appear

Each dashboard has a checklist of widgets. Tick the ones you want, untick the ones you don't.

Teacher widgets

  • File upload
  • School queue
  • Bulletin board
  • Help card
  • Status cards
  • Pending users
  • Quota requests
  • Pending print approvals

Student widgets

  • File upload
  • Queue
  • Bulletin board
  • Academy CTA
  • Quick links
  • Teachers and admins
  • Help card

The system always keeps the last enabled widget locked on. You can't end up with a blank dashboard, even if you try.

For example, if you're not using the quota system, turn off the Quota requests card on the teacher dashboard so it doesn't take up space. If you don't want a bulletin board, untick Bulletin on both sides and it disappears for everyone.

Picking teacher status cards

The teacher dashboard's status row is a strip of compact printer-status tiles. Each tile counts a slice of the fleet:

  • Next finish — the printer with the soonest finish time
  • Idle — printers ready but not currently printing
  • Paused — paused print jobs
  • Attention — printers needing a user action
  • Offline — printers that aren't reachable
  • Ongoing — currently printing
  • Pending — queue items waiting for a printer

Each tile has its own visibility checkbox. Hide the ones that aren't useful for your classroom — for example, a single-room lab probably doesn't need both Idle and Pending taking up two tiles.

Previewing before you save

Both configurators have a Preview button. It opens a showcase-mode render of the chosen dashboard, with your current widget configuration baked in, exactly as a learner or teacher would see it.

Preview mode rendering the dashboard as a student would see it

Preview mode is read-only — clicking the upload zone, the queue or the help links won't do anything destructive. It's strictly a visual sanity check.

Use Preview every time you tweak a widget. It's much faster than logging out, logging in as a test student, and remembering to log back in as yourself.

What students and teachers see right after a change

Changes save instantly when you toggle a setting. The next time a student or teacher loads /panel/dashboard, they'll see the new layout. Users who already had the dashboard open will see the change on the next refresh or navigation.

There's no broadcast notification when you change the dashboard layout — the change just shows up. If you're rolling out a big rearrangement, post a heads-up in the classroom bulletin so students know what's new.

Defaults you can rely on

A fresh School account ships with sensible defaults:

  • Both dashboards enabled
  • All widgets on
  • All teacher status cards visible
  • An empty quick-links list (so the widget doesn't appear on the student dashboard until you add at least one link)
  • The teachers / admins widget shows every teacher and admin on the account by default

You can start using the dashboards immediately and tune them later as you learn what your class needs.
