AI help in Expert mode: print goals and slicer setting lookup


Pre-release: Guided slicer and its AI assistant are not live yet. This article is available for internal review and may change before release.


Expert mode includes an optional AI assistant for two focused jobs: suggesting a small set of settings for a written print goal, and finding one exact setting when you know what you want to change but not where it lives. Recommendations stay reviewable and use the slicer's normal undo history.


AI help uses the AI slicer-assist allowance and may be disabled by your organization. The rest of Expert mode does not depend on AI.

Open the assistant

Open Cloud Slicer, switch to Expert mode, and open the assistant panel. Choose between the print-goal and setting-lookup tabs.


The assistant is deliberately smaller than a general chat. It only works with the active slicer setup and returns structured recommendations that SimplyPrint can validate.


If the account, organization, or rank does not allow AI slicer assists, the panel explains that the assistant is unavailable or shows the eligible upgrade action.


Ask for a print goal

Use the goal mode for a result such as “make this bracket strong without taking all day” or “make the visible surface smoother.” The request includes the active plate's six labelled views, measured printability report, printer capabilities, compatible profile and filament traits, allowed global process settings, and your written goal.


The active plate must contain a model with a ready content fingerprint. Models on other plates are not included. If the model, printer, engine, profile, or relevant setting changes while the request is being built or after the answer arrives, the old answer cannot be applied.


Do not include personal, confidential, or identifying information in the goal. The assistant does not need a person's name or the original model filename to make a settings recommendation.


Review goal recommendations

The assistant can recommend a real compatible print profile and a short list of global process settings. It does not offer per-object overrides in goal mode.


Each row shows the setting, proposed value, reason, importance, and confidence. Select only the rows you want. A profile recommendation names the actual local profile rather than showing a generic “suggested profile” label.


A response that already matches the active setup is shown as already matching instead of presenting an Apply button that does nothing.


Find an exact setting

Use setting lookup for a question such as “where do I enable support?” or “remove this one line from my machine start G-code.” SimplyPrint first searches its local, versioned setting index and sends only the top matching setting metadata to the assistant.


Lookup can navigate to process, machine, or filament settings. Choose Show me where to switch to the correct editor, expand the relevant category, find the setting, and highlight it.


The result can recommend a normal value change, explain that no safe change is available, or prepare a tightly constrained text edit for a supported multiline setting.


Review a text edit

A text edit shows the exact before-and-after difference. The assistant is not allowed to replace a whole G-code block with arbitrary generated commands.


For the initial safe workflow, a G-code edit can only remove one exact existing occurrence. The server rejects generated replacement text, ambiguous multiple matches, locked settings, and a final value that fails the setting's own validator.


Use Copy when you want the proposed safe value on the clipboard without applying it. Use Leave it to keep the current value.


Apply and undo changes

Choose Apply selected changes after reviewing the checked rows. The assistant creates one slicer-history command for the selected profile and settings, so the whole action can be undone together.


The Undo action is shown only while that assistant command is still the latest undoable command. If you make another slicer edit first, the assistant does not blindly undo the newer work.


An answer can only be applied once. This prevents duplicate telemetry and keeps one-step undo tied to the original pre-assistant values.


Understand permissions and safety checks

The assistant honors the current setting-change permission, profile-change permission, rank setting allowlist or blocklist, and whether the setting remains enabled and editable at apply time.


Server validation removes unknown setting keys, invalid profiles, duplicate recommendations, out-of-range values, unsafe text edits, and internal labels that should not reach the user. The browser checks the same active context again before applying.


The assistant can explain a setting without being allowed to edit it. A denied or teacher-locked candidate is marked read-only and cannot be turned into an apply action by changing the browser request.


Understand data and allowances

Goal mode sends six model views and the minimized context described above. Lookup mode sends the written question, matching setting metadata, and the current value needed for the selected setting. It does not send model images for a simple setting lookup.


SimplyPrint sends OpenAI API requests with persistent response storage disabled. School-student AI remains unavailable until zero-data-retention approval is active. Cached answers do not consume another assist, and failed requests are refunded. The panel shows the account's current AI allowance; rank, user, and workgroup caps are enforced separately when a request is submitted.


Recent accepted or declined choices can guide the next answer in the same session. The latest choice wins, so declining and later accepting a setting does not leave it permanently suppressed.
