Bambu Lab: LAN-only mode and Developer Mode - how to enable
To use SimplyPrint with a Bambu Lab printer on current firmware, you need to enable LAN-only Mode and Developer Mode on the printer. Both. This guide walks through enabling them and finding the access code SimplyPrint needs.
What is LAN-only Mode?
LAN-only Mode disconnects the printer from Bambu Lab's cloud. The printer only talks to devices on your local network, including the SimplyPrint Bambu Lab Client (the bridge software running on your Pi, mini PC, or Mac).
This is what allows SimplyPrint to send commands to the printer on current firmware. With Bambu's Authorization Control System, printers in Cloud mode block third-party write actions; printers in LAN-only Mode with Developer Mode do not.
What is Developer Mode?
Developer Mode is a per-printer toggle Bambu Lab added alongside the ACS rollout. When LAN-only Mode is enabled, Developer Mode is what allows local applications to actually drive the printer (start prints, set temperatures, send movement commands). Without it, you'd see the printer in SimplyPrint but couldn't do anything with it.
Developer Mode shipped in these firmware versions:
- X1 series - 01.08.03.00 and later
- A1 series - 01.05.00.00 and later
- P1 series - 01.08.02.00 and later
- H2D - 01.01.00.01 and later
- P2 series - shipped with Developer Mode from the start
If your printer is on older firmware than these versions, you don't need Developer Mode yet, but you also don't have ACS restrictions. As soon as you update to a version that has Developer Mode, you'll need to enable both modes to keep SimplyPrint working.
Enabling LAN-only Mode
On the printer screen:
- Go to Settings.
- Open WLAN / Network settings.
- Toggle LAN-only Mode on.
After enabling LAN-only Mode for the first time, power-cycle the printer.
Bambu Lab's own guide: Enable Developer Mode (Bambu Lab wiki). Video walkthrough for P1 and A1 series:
Enabling Developer Mode
Once LAN-only Mode is enabled, a Developer Mode option appears in the same settings menu. Toggle it on. That's it.
If you don't see the Developer Mode option, your firmware is older than the versions listed above and doesn't have it yet.
Finding your printer's access code
SimplyPrint needs the printer's access code to connect. The code is shown on the printer screen in the LAN-only Mode area, and the exact path varies by model:
Model | Where to find the access code |
|---|---|
A1 / A1 Mini | Settings > WLAN / Network > LAN-only Mode |
P1P / P1S | Settings > WLAN / Network |
X1 / X1C / X1E | Settings > LAN Mode |
H2D / P2 series | Settings > LAN Mode |
Enter this code in the SimplyPrint Bambu Lab Client when adding the printer. If you change firmware versions and the code rotates (it sometimes does), update it in the client to reconnect.
After enabling: what changes
- Full SimplyPrint functionality is restored on current firmware: start prints, AMS control, temperature control, movement, statistics.
- Bambu Handy stops working for this printer. Bambu's app requires Cloud mode. The SimplyPrint mobile app covers the same ground (control, status, AMS, webcam) and more.
- Firmware updates via Bambu Handy stop working. Use the offline USB / microSD method, or briefly switch modes. See How to update Bambu Lab firmware in LAN-only mode.
- You'll need a USB stick or microSD card in the printer for file transfers in LAN-only Mode.
