How to update Bambu Lab firmware in LAN-only mode
How to update Bambu Lab firmware in LAN-only mode
You can update your Bambu Lab printer's firmware while it stays in LAN-only Mode, without re-enabling Cloud mode and without using Bambu Handy. The supported path is an offline update from a USB stick or microSD card. This article walks through both that offline path and a faster online alternative for when the offline package isn't available yet.
This matters because all newer Bambu Lab printers (and the latest firmware on older models) need LAN-only Mode with Developer Mode enabled to work with SimplyPrint. That means the firmware-update path many users learned, "open Bambu Handy and tap update", is no longer available once your printer is in LAN-only Mode.
What you need
- The printer powered on and on your local network.
- Removable storage:
- X1 / X1C / X1E, P1P / P1S, A1 / A1 Mini - a microSD card.
- H2D and newer (H2 series) - a USB stick.
- The offline firmware package from bambulab.com/en/support/firmware-download/all.
- 10-20 minutes uninterrupted. Don't power the printer off mid-update.
Update from USB / microSD (recommended)
This is the cleanest path and keeps your printer in LAN-only Mode the whole time.
- Go to the Bambu Lab firmware download page and pick your exact printer model.
- Download the offline firmware package. Don't unzip it. Don't rename it. The printer expects the file as Bambu shipped it.
- Copy the file to the root of your microSD card or USB stick.
- Insert the card/stick into the printer.
- On the printer screen, go to Settings > Firmware. You'll see an option like Update from SD card or Update Offline (the exact wording varies by model).
- Start the update and let it run for 10-20 minutes. Don't power the printer off.
Bambu's per-model wiki guides have the exact menu paths and screenshots:
When the update finishes, the printer reboots. LAN-only Mode and Developer Mode stay enabled, and your SimplyPrint connection comes right back. No re-setup needed.
Alternative: briefly switch to Cloud mode, update, switch back
Sometimes Bambu publishes a new firmware over the cloud (OTA) before the offline package is available on the download page. If you need that specific version, or you just want a faster path, you can temporarily flip out of LAN-only Mode, let the printer update over the internet, and then switch back. Some users prefer this over the USB/SD route.
The step most users miss: the printer has to be bound to a Bambu account to check for and install firmware over the cloud. Disabling LAN-only Mode alone isn't enough.
- On the printer screen, disable LAN-only Mode.
- Open Bambu Handy on your phone and scan the QR code shown on the printer screen. This binds the printer to your Bambu account. (If you've used Bambu Handy with this printer before, this is just re-pairing it.)
- Trigger the firmware check, either from the printer screen or from Bambu Handy, and install the update.
- When the update is done, on the printer screen re-enable LAN-only Mode and Developer Mode.
- Your SimplyPrint connection comes back. You don't need to keep the printer bound to Bambu Handy after the update.
AMS and accessory firmware compatibility
A common reason to update printer firmware on an otherwise-fine setup: you bought a new AMS unit (or another accessory) and its firmware isn't compatible with your printer's older firmware. The fix is to update the printer's firmware to a version that supports the accessory.
You can do this entirely in LAN-only Mode using either method above. Nothing about the AMS firmware path requires Cloud mode, Bambu Handy, or unpairing from SimplyPrint.
If after the update the AMS still misbehaves, power-cycle both the printer and the AMS unit before troubleshooting further.
Why we recommend staying semi-current
Bambu Lab has eight different printer models in active use and hundreds of firmware versions across them. We do our best to keep SimplyPrint compatible with old firmware, but very old firmware (multiple years behind current) may eventually cause connection or feature issues even in LAN-only Mode. New accessories like AMS units are also more likely to require newer printer firmware.
You don't need to chase every release, but it's worth updating at least once or twice a year, especially before adding new hardware.
