How to update the SimplyPrint Client (in-app, Docker, Linux and release channels)
How to update the SimplyPrint Client (in-app, Docker, Linux and release channels)
New SimplyPrint Client versions ship fixes and new printer support all the time, so updating is the first thing to try when something misbehaves. This guide shows how to update from inside the Client, what to do on Docker, Homebrew and over SSH, and how the Stable and Canary release channels work.
What this guide covers
- Check which version you are on
- Update from inside the Client
- What an update does to running prints
- Stable and Canary release channels
- Docker: "Managed externally"
- Homebrew on a Mac
- Update by hand over SSH (Linux and Raspberry Pi)
- Windows portable zip
Check which version you are on
- Open the Client: http://localhost:8000 on the device it runs on, or http://<device-ip>:8000 from another computer.
- Go to Settings > About. Version shows what you run.
Check: a version like 1.0.0-rc.23 is the SimplyPrint Client. A version like 1.0.0-beta.117 is the old SimplyPrint Bambu Lab client, which no longer gets updates - move to the new Client with Migrating from the SimplyPrint Bambu Lab client to the new SimplyPrint Client.
Don't mix this up with the Cloud Slicer version in SimplyPrint. The Client version is only shown in the Client itself.
Update from inside the Client
This works for the Windows installer, the Mac installer, the Linux installer and the Raspberry Pi image.
- Open the Client and look at the status menu in the bottom-left corner. When an update is ready, it says so there.
- Or go to Settings > About and click Check.
- Click Install update.
- The Client downloads the update and restarts itself. The page comes back after the restart.
Check: Settings > About shows the new version, and your printers are online again.
Updates are opt-in. The Client checks for a new version every hour and tells you, but it only installs when you click the button. If a new version fails to start, the Client goes back to the version that worked.
What an update does to running prints
Nothing. The Client restarts, the printers keep printing, and they come back online in SimplyPrint when the Client is up again.
The one thing to know: while the Client restarts, it can miss an event, such as a print finishing in exactly that moment. Then SimplyPrint doesn't learn how that print ended.
Stable and Canary release channels
Stable is the default and the recommended channel. Canary gets new versions earlier, with less testing - useful when a fix you need is only on Canary for now.
- Go to Settings > About > Update channel.
- Pick Stable or Canary.
- Scroll up to Updates and click Check.
Check: Install update appears when the channel you picked has a version you don't have yet.
Not every Stable version is also built for Canary. If you are on Canary and a newer Stable version is out, switch back to Stable and click Check again.
Docker: "Managed externally"
In Docker, Settings > About shows Managed externally and the Check button is greyed out. That is expected: a container cannot replace itself, so you update it by pulling the new image and recreating the container. Your printers and settings live in the simplyprint_data volume, so they survive.
With docker run:
- Run
docker pull simplyprint/simplyprint-client. - Run
docker stop simplyprint-client, thendocker rm simplyprint-client. - Start it again with the same
docker runcommand you used to install it, including-v simplyprint_data:/root/.config/SimplyPrint.
With Docker Compose:
- In the folder with your
compose.yaml, rundocker compose pull. - Run
docker compose up -d. Compose recreates the container on the new image.
Check: Settings > About shows the new version, and your printers are still there.
docker restart on its own is not enough. It restarts the existing container on the old image. The image tag sets the release channel: simplyprint/simplyprint-client (the latest tag) is Stable, and simplyprint/simplyprint-client:canary is Canary.
Homebrew on a Mac
If you installed with Homebrew, Settings > About shows Managed by Homebrew. Click Update there, or run brew upgrade simplyprint/tap/simplyprint-client in Terminal.
Check: the Client comes back with the new version in Settings > About.
Update by hand over SSH (Linux and Raspberry Pi)
If the in-app update fails, run the installer again. It replaces the program and keeps your printers and settings.
- Connect to the device over SSH (or open a terminal on it).
- Run
sudo bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://download.simplyprint.io/client/install-linux.sh)". - Wait for it to finish. It stops the running Client, installs the new version and starts it again.
Check: Settings > About shows the new version. If the Client still won't start, restart the device.
Windows portable zip
The portable zip build does not update itself. Download the new zip, or switch to the Windows installer, which updates from inside the Client. Quit the running Client before you install.
