Manage the SimplyPrint Client: logs, password, backups and printers

Once the SimplyPrint Client is running, most day-to-day jobs happen in its own web page: downloading logs for support, protecting it with a password, backing it up, fixing a printer's IP address or Bambu Lab access code, and getting a printer back without losing its history.

What this guide covers

Open the Client

  • On the device it runs on: http://localhost:8000. On Windows and Mac you can also click the SimplyPrint icon in the system tray or menu bar.
  • From another computer: http://<device-ip>:8000.

The menu on the left has Printers, Logs and Settings. The status menu in the bottom-left corner shows the Client's health and updates, and has the restart button.

If 8000 is already used by another program, the Client picks the next free port (8001, 8002 and so on). Docker is the exception: there you set the port yourself.

Download the logs

Support asks for logs when something goes wrong, because they show what the Client and the printers said to each other.

  1. Open the Client and click Logs in the left menu.
  2. Click the download icon at the top of the log view (its tooltip says Download logs).
  3. Click Select all, so the system log and every printer's log are included.
  4. Click Download. You get one .zip file.

Check: the .zip file is in your downloads folder.

Share the .zip with the SimplyPrint team member helping you: email it to them directly, or upload it to Google Drive, OneDrive, WeTransfer or similar and send them the link. Our general contact address can't receive files, and log files are often too large for the chat.

Can't open the Client at all? The log folder on disk is listed under Settings > About > Logs on a working install. On a Mac it is ~/Library/Logs/SimplyPrint (the Library folder may be hidden).

Restart the Client

  1. Click the status menu in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Click Restart, then confirm Restart.

Check: the page comes back after a few seconds, and your printers return to online.

If the Client doesn't come back, restart the computer or Raspberry Pi it runs on. On Windows and Mac, check that the Client started again after the restart.

Protect it with a password

Anyone who can open the Client's page can add and remove printers in it. They can't reach your SimplyPrint account or anything stored there, but a password keeps the local setup safe.

  1. Go to Settings > Access.
  2. Turn on Require sign-in.
  3. Enter a username and password, confirm the password, and save.

Check: open the Client in a private browser window. It asks for the username and password.

Choose who on your network can open it

  1. Go to Settings > Network.
  2. Under External access, choose Accessible on your network or This device only, and click Save.
  3. Restart the Client from the status menu in the bottom-left corner. The change only takes effect after a restart.

Check: from another computer, http://<device-ip>:8000 opens (network) or doesn't (this device only).

By default, Windows and Mac installs are reachable from this device only. Linux, Raspberry Pi and Docker installs are reachable on your network, because you usually manage them from another computer.

On a Raspberry Pi or another computer without a screen, keep external access on. If you turn it off, you can only change it back from that device itself.

The same page has the Port setting, if another program on the computer already uses the Client's port.

You don't need to be on the Client's network to use your printers. SimplyPrint, the mobile app and remote access all go through the cloud. The Client page is only for its own setup.

What the Client stores, and how to back it up

The Client is a bridge, so it holds very little:

  • each printer's connection details, such as IP address, serial number and access code
  • Bambu Lab account logins, if you connected printers in Bambu Cloud mode
  • its own settings, such as the password and port

Your print history, files, statistics and filament live in SimplyPrint, not in the Client. If the computer dies or is stolen, you lose only the connection: install the Client on another device and add the printers again, which takes a few minutes per printer.

The Client also backs itself up. Once a day it saves a bundle with every printer, account and setting, and it keeps the last few.

  1. Go to Settings > About and scroll to Configuration backup.
  2. To save one now, click Back up now.
  3. To go back to a backup, click Restore next to it. The Client restarts with that configuration.

Check: the new backup is listed under Automatic backups with today's date.

Backups contain secrets like access codes, so you can't download them from the page. The Configuration backup box shows the folder they are stored in, so you can copy them yourself.

Move the Client to another computer

  1. On the old computer, go to Settings > About > Configuration backup, click Back up now, and copy the newest backup file from the folder shown there.
  2. Stop the Client on the old computer, or switch that computer off. Two Clients connected to the same printers fight over them.
  3. Install the Client on the new computer. See How to install the SimplyPrint Client.
  4. On the new Client, go to Settings > About > Configuration backup, click Import from file… and pick the backup file. Confirm Import & restart.

Check: after the restart, your printers are listed in the new Client and come online in SimplyPrint.

Can't get the file off the old computer? Add the printers in the new Client and link them to the existing printers instead. See Re-add a printer and link it to the existing one.

Edit a printer's IP address or access code

Use this when a printer got a new IP address, or when you changed a Bambu Lab printer's access code.

  1. Click Printers and find the printer.
  2. Click Edit on its card.
  3. Change the field you need, then click Save changes:
    • IP address, for most printers (on Duet boards it is called Address).
    • Access code, for Bambu Lab and Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 printers. Enter it exactly as the printer's screen shows it.
    • Password, for Duet boards that have a Duet Web Control password.

Check: the printer reconnects and shows online in the Client.

To stop an IP address from changing again, give the printer a fixed IP address, or a DHCP reservation, in your router.

Use this after a reinstall, on a new computer, or when a printer has disappeared from the Client but is still in SimplyPrint. Linking connects the printer to the printer you already have in SimplyPrint, so it keeps its name, print history, costs and maintenance records.

Don't delete the printer in SimplyPrint and add it as a new one. Link it instead, so nothing is lost.

  1. In the Client, click Add printer, pick the brand and add the printer as you did the first time.
  2. The printer card now shows a setup code. Click Set up in SimplyPrint.
  3. In SimplyPrint, choose Link to existing.
  4. Pick the printer it belongs to and confirm.

Check: the printer is online in SimplyPrint, with its old name and print history.

Setting up several printers at once? Do them one after the other. Each one gets its own setup code.

Remove a printer from the Client

  1. Click Printers and find the printer.
  2. Click the remove button on its card and confirm Remove.

Check: the printer is gone from the Client's list.

This only unlinks the printer from this Client. The printer stays in your SimplyPrint account (offline) until you connect it again or delete it there.
