Student discount vs the School plan

SimplyPrint has two distinct programs aimed at education: the personal student discount, and the School plan for institutions. They are not interchangeable. This article explains who each one is for, what you get, and which one applies if you fall into both buckets.

Table of contents

  • TL;DR
  • The student discount (personal)
  • The School plan (institutional)
  • Side-by-side comparison
  • Which one applies to me
  • Can I have both

TL;DR

  • Student discount = an individual student paying a personal subscription, gets 40% (or 60%) off Basic or Pro for 12 months.
  • School plan = a school, college or university running a paid SimplyPrint account for its classroom, lab, or maker space, paid for by the institution and used by students under teacher supervision.

If you're a student paying for SimplyPrint with your own money, you want the student discount. If you're a teacher, IT admin or lab manager setting up SimplyPrint for a classroom of students, you want the School plan.

The student discount (personal)

  • Who pays: You, the student, on a personal credit card.
  • Who uses it: You.
  • Account type: A regular personal SimplyPrint account on Basic or Pro.
  • Discount: 40% off for 12 months, renewable up to 5 times. Bumps to 60% if your school already runs a paid SimplyPrint account.
  • How you verify: Your school-issued email and our recognised list of academic domains. Self-service in the panel, takes a few minutes.
  • Features: Same as standard Basic or Pro. The discount only changes the price, not the feature set.

Full details: The student discount: 40% off Pro for verified students.

The School plan (institutional)

  • Who pays: The school, college, university, or maker space.
  • Who uses it: Multiple students under one or more teacher accounts.
  • Account type: A SimplyPrint School plan account, which has dedicated features for classroom use — student approval queues, quotas, multi-teacher management, classroom dashboards, and education-specific privacy guarantees.
  • Pricing: Sold per print queue and per number of printers, separate quote depending on size. School plans include features that don't exist on Basic or Pro.
  • How you sign up: Start a School plan trial from the pricing page at simplyprint.io/pricing, or request a quote from simplyprint.io/schools if you need bespoke sizing for a multi-classroom rollout.
  • Features: Built around classroom workflows — print quotas per student, teacher review of student submissions, per-class queue groups, anonymous data handling, EU/US data residency options where applicable.

Which one applies to me

  • You're a student paying with your own money. Student discount.
  • You're a student at a school that already has a SimplyPrint School plan. Both can apply — see "Can I have both" below.
  • You're a teacher buying access for your students. School plan.
  • You're an IT admin setting up SimplyPrint for a classroom. School plan.
  • You're a parent buying SimplyPrint for your child who's in school. This is a grey area. The student discount is technically for the student to own — if your child can hold the account in their name and verify with their own school email, that's the right path. Otherwise it's a regular personal Basic or Pro account with no discount.

Can I have both

Yes, and this is the best case if your school is already a SimplyPrint customer.

If your school runs a paid School plan, you can:

  1. Be added to your school's account by your teacher, giving you full access to the classroom features on the School plan.
  2. Verify your own personal account separately for the student discount on the side, which gives you 60% off Basic or Pro for your own use at home.

The two don't conflict. The school account is for school work; your personal discounted account is for whatever you're printing in your bedroom.

After verifying for the student discount, if our system detects that your school is already a customer, the panel shows you a friendly card suggesting you ask your teacher to add you to the school account too. That's not a requirement — it's a useful suggestion that some students miss.
